I’ve been thinking about how to improve my writing. I’ve been reading Ben Brooks’ excellent book “The Nature of Writing.” I’ve been rereading Eliot for a new book of poems. I’m trying to pay more attention to the quality of my writing. A recent conversation with David Leighton prompted me to read his book “The Changing Landscape of the Ancient World.” This book contains many chapters on various types of archaeological sites. One of the chapters is a detailed discussion of the ancient sites in the British Isles, where David has spent his life. It’s very hard to get into this book. Some books are written for an academic audience, others for an audience with a limited amount of academic knowledge. “The Changing Landscape of the Ancient World” is written for an academic audience. David has arranged the book in a way that the chapters are chronological, so that readers can follow the development of knowledge of the ancient world. My background is very different from David’s.
